WWNBB @ SXSW – our label’s showcase in Austin

We bet that among the “5 things you didn’t expect from SXSW 2017” there will soon be a “Wait a second: did you say this stuff is from Italy?” – The showcase of a small independent record label curiously called We Were Never Being Boring will show you a side of Italy – and in a broader way an approach to music – you didn’t know could exist around the boot.

Friday, March 17th at The Sidewinder (inside), We Were Never Being Boring collective (aka WWNBB) presents six bands that will bring a great deal of good music, from indie-rock to electronic, from psychedelic lo-fi to indie-pop, and everything in between: a little festival inside the festival!

BIRTHH (https://www.facebook.com/birthhofficial)
Alice Bisi debuted her project at SXSW 2016 when she was not even allowed to see half of the shows because of her then 19 years of age. Since that first appearance she has been continuously playing shows, bringing her music to many prestigious European festivals (Ment, Eurosonic, Ypsigrock, to name a few). In March, she’s going to be back in Austin for SXSW 2017 amidst a year that is already full of unwinding surprises. The debut album Born in the Woods has received international praise, due to its’ breathtaking lyrics and vibrating sounds–a recipe for becoming completely absorbed in the songs.

Dizzyride (http://www.dizzyride.com)
Nicola and Zoë live in Brooklyn where their paths met a few years back. She comes from Montreal, Canada; he is from Venice, Italy. This is their first project together and their music can be described as lo-fi dream pop. Their songs are the perfect soundtrack to those endless nights in which you meet tons of incredible people and in your head are already writing a movie about all of them. Dizzyride just released their eponymous debut album and they are at the moment on tour in the US.

Echopark (https://www.facebook.com/theechopark)
Antonio Elia Forte lives in London, but his Mediterranean roots are vibrant in his passionate and at times euphoric way to face and dismantle synth-pop’s standard forms, and, while doing so, riding along walls of guitars built layer after layer after layer… Antonio is restless and never stops playing, reinventing, pushing the boundaries, and having fun. His sophomore album, Ties, out on March 10th, is a perfect gem that couldn’t debut on a better stage than that of SXSW.

Weird Black (https://www.facebook.com/weirdblackband)
This four piece from Rome plays a joyous psych-pop with a great passion for the Beatles and the Canterbury scene. Captain Luca Di Cataldo is a never ending volcano of ideas and songs, and while he is finalizing with Don Bolles (Ariel Pink, The Germs) the band’s sophomore album, set for release in the spring, it looks like there’s more and more urgent songs coming out right before SXSW. We couldn’t be happier to be facing the incoming spring with more surrealistic songs!

Halfalib (https://www.facebook.com/halfalib)
Marco Giudici might be a familiar face to some, for his bass playing with the band Any Other, but his solo project Halfalib is still somewhat mysterious even if the tracks are already scattered across the web and the physical album is on its way to the stores. Halfalib’s music floats between Chris Cohen and Mercury Rev inside a shiny cloud of its’ own, still transforming and doused with mystery.

TIGER! SHIT! TIGER! TIGER! (https://www.facebook.com/wearetstt)
We are long time admirers of this band even though it’s not part of our label-family (they have released with the awesome To Lose La Track and MiaCameretta Records), we are very excited they will be joining us to bring on stage their indie-rock à la Sonic Youth / Dinosaur Jr. A perfect energy shaker condensed in a 40 minutes set, like their latest album “Corners”, should be played cranked up to volume 11!

Polaroid DJ (https://www.facebook.com/polaroidallaradio)
Enzo Baruffaldi, from his hometown of Bologna, curates since 2001 the indie music blog “polaroid” (the nod is to Douglas Coupland’s “Polaroids From The Dead” and Belle & Sebastian’s “Ink Polaroids”, not the camera…) and a weekly radio show on Radio Città del Capo. In 2014, a survey conducted by Styleofsound.com included polaroid in the list of the “100 most influential blogs worldwide”. He wrote for Rolling Stone and various other magazines and webzines. When he djs he usually mixes indiepop and Northern Soul, and basically spends the entire set going back and forth from the dancefloor.

WWNBB night with BIRTHH – Brothers in Law – Love the Unicorn

LOCANDINA WWNBB COVO 2016

Wednesday, June 29, WWNBB will celebrate 7 years of never being boring, at Covo Summer Club, in Bologna. On stage BIRTHH, Brothers in Law and Love the Unicorn will perform starting at 8pm, while at the DJ booth Polaroid and Guagno will keep the dancing going. The beautiful poster for the night was designed by artist Fabio Borghi and will be available on Wednesday night on a limited numbered edition! We can’t wait to see you in the most beautiful city in the world, at the venue that has been described as the “Indie Club Mecca”!

debuting WWNB3 live video sessions

Three songs each, is the loose rule for the project, all other artistic decisions are in the bands’ own hands. The idea starts from the love we have for our bands and their fans, and the sometimes missing link of an intimate way to experience the music in a personally relatable live setting. So we decided to create, or take advantage, of an already intimate setting and bring it to you via our new “WWNB3”, a series of live videos produced together with the bands and able to express the raw character of who’s behind the music without the barrier of a package or an unfortunate PA at a random venue.

Our first series features the latest addition to the WWNBB’s family, BIRTHH, whose session was filmed shortly after the ending of the recordings for their album “Born in the Woods”, but before their live debut at SXSW in Austin, TX. It is a unique moment for the band as it pictures the very beginning stages of their career while giving a real sense of the direction BIRTHH has for the future. Enjoy the show!

BIRTHH shares haunting video for CHLORINE – announces tour

The first instant replay comes automatically, at first you can’t even tell wether for the video or the song, and the more you keep pressing play over and over, the less you get closer to an answer. The music video for BIRTHH‘s Chlorine is a beautiful work of art arranged by director Diego Gavioli to perfectly express on film what Alice Bisi’s words communicate in lyrics; unsettling gutted out feelings spinning in fragile containers, a black and white repetitiveness that eventually captures the fluorescent part of Chlorine, and a sense of completion that is never really exhaustive. In the meanwhile the song has captured the listener’s ears with a build up that leaves no escape: replay.

Just back from the debut at SXSW, BIRTHH announces the first shows in motherland Italy for the summer festivals, but stay tuned for more soon!

BIRTHH – Born in the Woods

COVER_BIRTHH

BIRTHH is Alice Bisi’s dark alter-ego, “the conscience of a nineteen-year-old who spends most of her time thinking about apocalyptic events “. It is a persona who defines herself “Queen Of Failureland”, a young queen who finds no peace inside her mind: “I thought love was enough / But truth is love is dead”. Born In The Woods isn’t just the voice of this character, it is her body itself: bass-drum kicks simulating frantic heartbeats, lungs breathing convulsively between the lines, guitars spinning vortexes till nausea, and almost tangible backing vocals intertwine synthetic layers that enshroud and penetrate the veins. Just as much as the music, even the lyrics are filled with references that evoke the flash through which BIRTHH speaks: “I’ll be poison in your blood / And I’ll be darkness in your eyes / And I’ll be propane in your lungs” (Wraith). Chlorine is the synthesis of a poisonous love: “You’re chlorine in my veins / The blood flooding to my brain.” The outcome in all cases is fatal: “and kill my senses now, I don’t mind / if you want death, darling, death you’ll find”(Senses). The sound of this torment shows great attention to detail and a taste for downtempo-ambient atmospheres. “I wanted the Wurlitzer and most of the guitars to have some kind of lo-fi imprint in order to contrast the sharp and neat sounds of the beats and of the arpeggiators; the organ and the harmonium have been inserted with pretty much the same purpose. We wanted to add percussion sounds taken from the everyday life (snap, claps, water, doors slamming, etc.) and to integrate them into fragmented rhythms that could disorient the listener. In most of the tracks we did not even use the bass: I liked the idea of being able to make an electronic music record without the aid of this central element: to get that depth we opted for kick-beats with a very low frequency.” Born In The Woods combines the sensitivity of songwriting with clear folk roots, to the refinement of electronic arrangements. The most striking feature of this album are the vocal harmonies, leading the songs to epic climaxes reminiscing of gospel music, making the intense voice of BIRTHH speak directly to the heart. Born in the Woods is available on 12″ vinyl, CD and digital.

I thought love was enough / But truth is love is dead”. Anche le parole di queste canzoni sono colme di riferimenti alla fisicità, alla carne stessa attraverso cui BIRTHH si racconta: “I’ll be poison in your blood / And I’ll be darkness in your eyes / And I’ll be propane in your lungs” proclama Wraith, mentre Chlorine descrive un avvelenamento da amore:“You’re chlorine in my veins / The blood flooding to my brain”. L’esito in ogni caso è fatale: “Kill my senses now, I don’t mind / if you want death, darling, death you’ll find” (Senses). Born in the Woods è disponibile su vinile 12″, su CD e in digitale.

Burnt Palms’s frontwoman Riley’s video for Over “illustrates the local splendors seen from coastal windows to the sea, shore-side vegetation, the windy two-lane twists & turns of Highway 1 and more that is something of a living postcard for the 831 area code.”

And if you want more, here are the US tour dates for the 4 bands in case you prefer to avoid Red River and 6th this week and hope in a more intimate show…
